About this book

Qur'anic sciences and tafsir book by Imam Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti on the order of the Surahs in the Qur'an, explaining how each chapter connects to the ones before and after it. Paperback for readers aged 18+, including beginning students.

Inner Dimensions from the Order of the Surahs in the Qur'an contains Imam al-Suyuti's unique exploration of the structure of the Book of Allah, specifically the sequence of its chapters in their complete form, at the conclusion of its revelation to Allah's Final Messenger ﷺ. A master of the Qur'anic sciences, he examines the reasons behind the order of the Surahs and reveals layers of meaning and interconnection across language, meaning, context, purpose and more.

On the effort invested in this work, al-Suyuti writes: “… since few people have spoken on… this subject, the majority of this text is the result of my own contemplation and borne of my own investigation. However, if I do mention something that someone else has said, I explicitly mention its source, and I only mention that which is accepted, which no one has rejected.” In this sense the text feels personal, offering a glimpse into the Imam's knowledge. He draws on Hadith, Tafsir, history and the Arabic language to make a wide range of connections and insights.

Despite the author's scholarship, the work is accessible to readers of all levels. It is carefully organized to present a coherent flow of ideas, so that even beginning students can benefit. The Surahs are discussed in order, chapter by chapter, with a consistent structure for each. Imam al-Suyuti comments in detail on the placement of each Surah in relation to what comes before and after it, and on the deeper meanings this arrangement might signify. His commentary is rich with references to Hadith, historical context and linguistic analysis. He also frequently quotes the opinions and insights of scholars of earlier generations, situating his analysis within the scholarship that came before him.

A striking feature of the book is the Imam's method of reflection. He does not merely present facts or traditional interpretations, but engages in contemplative analysis that brings out hidden wisdom in the structure of the Qur'an. The approach is both scholarly and spiritual, and invites readers to join him in this contemplative journey.
